Rochester is the “Home of the Giants” and a hunt or two in Rochester should, without question, be included in any Waterfowlers bucket list. Long believed to be extinct, the giant race of Canada goose was rediscovered here in 1961 – 1962 and large numbers of wintering and migrating giants continue to call Rochester home. With many defining and unique characteristics and being larger in size, these giants are a part of history and a true trophy. The Rochester flock has been protected and closely monitored for many years and they are thriving. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has maintained the size of the Rochester flock by carefully balancing the yearly harvest by hunters and the average hatch. Since 1941, the Rochester Canada goose bag limit has always been less liberal than the rest of the state allowing a 2/day bag limit. In 2010 the daily bag limit has been increased to 3/day in the Rochester zone and the season has been extended to January 2nd. These changes create increased opportunities for hunting in Rochester during the peak population period. At Broken Wing, we average just below or just above a club harvest of 1000 giants each season through extensive daily scouting and field management we stay consistent throughout the season. We would enjoy sharing a pit with you when you can and let you be the judge, we feel Rochester goose hunting and the experience rivals anywhere in the country.
